The cozy city

This sophisticated yet charming city sits about 500 meters above sea level and 50 km north of the Alps. Its climate is temperate and can often be influenced by the moist Atlantic air. Winters here are fairly cold and sub-zero temperatures are not unusual, while summers are pleasantly warm but not uncomfortably hot. The city was believed to be founded in 1158, which was the earliest date the city is cited in a document. The modern name of Munich originated from the old term"forum apud Munichen," which translates to "by the monks' place" and dates back to the twelfth century.

Today, Munich is the capital city of Bavaria, the largest state in Germany, and is located in the southeastern region of Germany. With a population of over 1.3 million, the city is one of the largest industrial centres of the country and is a hub for many important industries, such as automotive and mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, information technology, financial services, media, and tourism. Notable companies in Munich include Alianz SE, Bavaria Film, BMW, EADS, Infineon Technologies, Linde AG, Munich Re, Siemens AG, etc.

Munich is a green, clean and very relaxed city. The city's architecture incorporates all manner of architectural styles from different eras: Romantic, Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque, Rococo. The city is fairly flat, with few high-rise buildings, which gives the city a somewhat provincial atmosphere. Munich is known as a safe city without a sharp separation among social classes. The city's relaxed yet sophisticated lifestyle attracts celebrities from elsewhere in Germany and abroad and many of these people maintain second residences in the city.

You can hear the folk music and witness the traditional Bavarian attires not only in museums and at festivals, but very often in everyday life, on the street, in the beer garden, restaurant, etc. The world famous trademark of Munich includes the well-known leather pants ("Lederhose") and Oktoberfest.
